The Port of Aberdeen is one of Britain's busiest ports, and is the chief commercial port for the northeast of Scotland. It services over 9,000 visiting ships each year along with four million tonnes of cargo. Additionally, it is Scotland's main east coast ferry port and port-of-call for cruise ships. Terminal facilities are minimal, although there is a small coffee shop as well as a convenience store in the terminal.

NorthLink Ferries timetable makes travelling to Orkney and Shetland convenient. There are nightly sailings from Aberdeen to Lerwick in Shetland - with four of these sailings going via Orkney's capital, Kirkwall.

NorthLink's ferries have been designed and built to the highest standards in terms of both safety and comfort. The à la carte and self service restaurants offer a large selection of menus featuring local produce. Each ferry provides roomy lounge areas, bars, children's play areas and comfortable ensuite cabins. A modern cinema showing the latest releases is available on longer routes.

Kirkwall, Orkney's capital, is built around a wide sheltered bay. It is the trading centre and administrative seat of the Orkney Islands. Kirkwall was founded sometime prior to 1046 and became important as a port on the northern trade route to Scandinavia and the Baltic. Main features include St Magnus Cathedral, dating from 1137; the Bishop?s palace, dating from 1200; and the Earl?s palace from 1600. More appealing, however, are the narrow winding streets and lanes of the old town, which has not changed much over the centuries.
