Newhaven
Located between the seaside resorts of Eastbourne and Brighton Newhaven is the gateway to
Dieppe France on the south east coast. The Ferry Port of Newhaven is well serviced by
roads and rail. Situated off the A259 coast road or accessed from the A27 turning onto the
A26 at Beddingham Roundabout. Simply follow the signs for the Ferry terminal.
Until 1570 the River Ouse had entered the sea at Seaford but history tells us that a
tempest suddenly changed the course of nature and altered the course of the river to a
point near its present mouth. Following this Newhaven was born and has grown from its
early routes as a barge port to a steamer services to Dieppe to the Ferry service as we
know it today.
If you have time to spare before your ferry why not take a stroll around this small but
friendly town or visit the Victorian Fort high on the hill overlooking the port.
Dieppe
One of the most challenging things about Dieppe is where to begin enjoying the facilities
that this town port has to offer.
As you wander down the streets of Dieppe you may notice that many of the street names
commemorate Operation Jubilee. This military disaster saw some 3,000 of the 6,000 soldiers
involved either die or be captured on 19th August 1944. But that is only part of the rich
historical culture of Dieppe. You can take the Villes et Pays d'Art et d'Histoire - a
series of tours lasting 1 1/2 hours which encompasses Dieppe history and the Chateau
Museum, Church of Saint Jacques and other historic centre tours. These tours run June to
September and details are available from Dieppe Tourist Office. If your stay is "out
of season" you can still visit some of these historical attractions but it is best to
check opening times.
Shopping in Dieppe is a joy and the Saturday street market is a delight not to be missed.
Villagers and tradesmen from surrounding areas bring their homemade produce to sell and
the choice is extensive and varied. It all begins about 8am and is over by mid-day but a
visit will almost certianly ensure a sumptuous feast for lunch.
If you don't want to a take-away lunch from the market then why not stop at one of
Dieppe's many Cafes or restaurants. Dieppe is an ideal venue for family trips and children
are most welcome in cafes and bars. Many of these provide great value and are popular with
tourists and locals alike. Dieppe is not renowned for its nightlife but it does have a few
bars and cafes that stay open on into the night.
Dieppe has many activities on offer in and around the the local area including swimming,
cycling and beach walks.
For those wishing to travel further into France Dieppe provides a great base from which to
start.
